| |
| Highlights |
| Meandering through the woody landscape amidst the forests of Karnataka
is the Cauvery - the most majestic and sacred river of South India. The
river offers both adventure and opportunity for nature lovers. Nestled
along this mighty river is the Bheemeshwari Fishing Camp,
world-renowned as home to the great 'Mahseer' - the finest & the
largest tropical sporting fish known to man. Tucked away from the
milling crowds, yet close enough for you to reach, this camp offers a
slice of nature that is entirely unique, one in which you can totally
feel free! |
| Activity |
| Though fishing has been a huge industry in India for centuries, angling
or sport fishing became a serious pastime only in the mid-19th century.
British anglers of the Raj came in pursuit of the Trout and Salmon but
found a creature that far surpassed other fish as a fighter - the
Mahseer or The Large Headed One. It spawned an entire clan of
adventurers (including the legendary Jim Corbett), who would travel to
far-flung areas of the country just to battle with the mighty Mahseer. |

| Srirangapatna |
|
|
| |
| Highlights |
| Srirangapatna
is often clubbed with Mysore (which is just 13 kms away). In reality,
Srirangapatna needs to be considered as a stand alone destination. For
one it has a perfect setting as an island on banks of river Cauvery. It
has rich story to narrate as it witnessed the valour of Tipu Sultan.
Sri Ranganatha temple at Srirangapatna is an important pilgrimage
centre. Naturalists will love Ranganathitu Bird Sanctuary, arguably one
of the best in India. |
Sightseeing |
| Sri Ranganatha Temple: |
| Srirangapatna derives its name from the presiding deity of this temple
Lord Ranganatha. The huge temple with a grand gopuram is a synthesis of
both Vijayanagara and Hoysala School of temple architecture. Sri
Ranganatha is portrayed as reclining on the bed of Aadi Sesha much
similar to what is seen in Srirangam. Near the sanctum sanctorum, you
can see motifs of all the 24 forms of Vishnu engraved on the pillars. |
Srirangapatna Fort: |
| Today the fort may be in ruins but it has a great story to narrate. On
May 4 1799 AD, East India Company troops under the command of Colonel
Wellesley stormed into the town by breaching the fort. Till then,
Mysore army under the leadership of Tiger of Mysore had held English
soldiers at bay. |
Daria Daulat: |
| This used to be Tipu Sultan's summer palace and is currently a museum
housing Tipu memorabilia. It is a two-storied building built mainly of
teak and influenced by Indo - Islamic architecture with a
well-landscaped garden in the front. The walls of the palace are
adorned with murals and paintings that reflect the times and valour of
Tipu Sultan. The most interesting is the one depicting the defeat of
Colonel Baillie and the British forces in hands of Hyder Ali and Tipu
Sultan. |
Gumbaz: |
| This was built by Tipu Sultan in 1784 AD as the final resting place for
his parents. Later, after Tipu's death, he was also buried at Gumbaz.
Gumbaz also features a Moghul styled mosque. The windows and doors
feature high quality ivory craftsmanship. |
Jumma Masjid: |
| This imposing mosque was built by Tipu Sultan in 1787 AD. It has two
lofty minarets that can be climbed through a flight of 200 steps. The
Masjid houses Persian extracts from holy Koran. |
Sangam: |
| The Cauvery and its two tributaries the Lokapavani and the Paschima
Vahini meet at sangam and is a serene countryside. Coracle rides are a
major attraction at sangam. |
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary: |
| It
is a famous bird sanctuary just 4 kms from Srirangapatna. It comprises
of six islets on the banks of river cauvery. Ranganthittu is a paradise
for those into birding. Commonly sighted birds include Painted Stork,
Open bill Stork, Spoonbill, Woolly-necked Stork, White Ibis and
Stork-billed Kingfisher, Bats and other common birds. |

| Highlights |
| Nestled
in the southern fringes of the Nagarhole National Park, the Kabini
River Lodge is a perfect getaway for nature lovers. The breathtaking
locale with the tranquil backwaters of the River Kabini presents an
ideal setting for a long-awaited vacation. Once the hunting lodge of
the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore, Kabini River Lodge is today rated by
the British Tatler's Travel Guide as one of the top 5 wildlife resorts
in the world. Kabini is pure elephant country as one can see numerous
herds at a time. However, the blaze of the elusive tiger always haunts
you as you roam through the verdant jungle here. Once widely known for
the mass elephant-trapping operations called 'Khedda', Kabini stands as
one of the brightest beacons for wildlife preservation in India today. |
| Activity |
| The main wildlife viewing activity here is the exciting safaris on
open-top jeeps into the famed Nagarhole National Park. Our first ride
into the Park is at the crack of dawn and we visit the park again at
4.30 pm. A boat ride on the River Kabini would sure be a treat to your
eyes, as many elephants tend to congregate on the banks in the
evenings. You could be sure to see as many as 150-200 elephants on a
summer evening. Guests can choose between the traditional, circular
boat (made of bamboo and buffalo hide) and the regular motorboat for
the river cruise. Elephant rides lasting about 45 minutes are also part
of our package at Kabini. In the evening, movies on wildlife are shown
in our audio-visual hall. We could also start a campfire and barbeque
at the Ghol Ghar in the night. |

| Masinagudi (Near Mudumalai Off Ooty - Mysore Road) |
|
|
| |
| Highlights |
| Nestling
in the foothills of the Nilgiri Mountains and bordering the twin
wildlife sanctuaries of Bandipur Mudumalai is Jungle Retreat run by the
Mathias family. The retreat is surrounded by dry deciduous forests,
home to the Asiatic elephants and co-habited by a variety of wildlife
including the Indian tiger. This 35-acre holiday retreat has been
converted from a dilapidated sericulture farm and today offers
accommodation in country style cottages. |
Activity |
| Trekking: |
| Walking shoes are definitely advisable on this trip, because treks
through virgin forest and alongside sparkling streams feature on our
menu of activities. Share the secrets of the dry deciduous forest which
boasts a wealth of flora and fauna that thrill the ornithologist, the
botanist and the interested nature lover. The trip could get
adventurous - if the tree trunk you're leaning on moves, say a small
prayer. Alternatively one could also trek thorough open meadows
alongside gurgling streams, rivers and watering holes. The topography
can be as distinctive as grassland to scrub jungles to deciduous
forests. |
Safaris: |
| Safaris: The National Park organizes van safaris into unspoilt
sanctuary areas, either from 6.30 - 8.30 am or 3.00 - 6.00 pm. The ride
usually lasts anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour and spotting game
is pretty common. These trips are perfect for wildlife buffs who wish
to spot the spotted deer, bear with a bear or even see something as
boaring as a boar. Alternatively, you could tour the jungle Mowgli
style, atop a tame elephant! Four people and a trained mahout will be
carried by our resident gentle giant into the jungle, away from the
beaten track, along the road not taken. Because the elephant actually
goes through the jungle, chances of seeing game at close quarters are
pretty good. |
Elephant Camp: |
| Visit a forest department elephant camp where around 29 pachyderms are
cared for and trained. You can witness them giving a thorough cleaning,
followed by a pooja (offering to the deity) by the elephants themselves
and culminating in feeding them. Believe it or not, each has their own
diet on an everyday basis to adhere to. But beware, lest you get taken
for a ride! |
