kms from North East of Mumbai, Igatpuri is covered by the Sahyadris
from all the sides. Igatpuri is a small hill station but it has all the
ingredients of a convincing weekend getaway. After the monsoon season,
Igatpuri covers itself in all shades of green and the streams and
waterfalls starts to burst out with water. There is nothing much
adventurous to do here but you can always walk down the uncharted
lanes, feel the lush green grass, get soaked in the waterfalls which
are worth its price in gold or let's say 'Priceless'. This hill station
is full of natural wonders which you can explore leisurely. Few which
have already made their mark are the Batsa River and the Camel Valley. |

the rainy season. |

| Chiplun |
|
|
| |
| Highlights |
| An
ancient town on the banks of the Vashishthi River, Chiplun is one of
the few towns that features on the tourism map of the Konkan region.
Well connected by Konkan Railway, Chiplun lies in a valley between the
Western Ghats on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other and is the
link between the Western Coast and the interiors of Maharashtra. |
Sightseeing |
| Parshuram Temple and Village: |
| According
to legend, Parshuram, a hot-tempered saint, gave up all his land to
prove to his guru that he was a true sanyasi. He came to Pethe
Parshuram, the legend continues, and in characteristic anger, threw his
mighty axe into the churning sea, which at that time, presumably, came
right up to Chiplun. |
Vashishti River: |
| There are many things to do by the river which meanders along a wayward course in this region. |
Walavalkar Shivaji Museum: |
| This museum is a show-time piece where history takes up little space.
The rest is feel-good entertainment of an imitative pop-art variety.
The warrior king has had his legacy hijacked by political opportunists
and splashed all over the Konkan in Technicolour. Built by a trust
centered on Sant Walavalkar, it displays vignettes from Shivajis life.
The museum is towards Goa on a detour for Dherwan. |
Koyna Dam: |
| Some 3,000 odd ft above sea level, this towering dam was a favourite
spot for picnickers of the region till Mohammad Atta and friends
crashed the party. Now entry is forbidden for security reasons but
there is still enough to do. |
Marleshwar Temple (65 kms): |
| An interesting Shiva temple, where you are expected to pass through caves to get to God. There are waterfalls too. |
How to reach there |
| Nearest
Airport Mumbai is 250 kms away. Chiplun is the nearest railway station
that is 5 kms from the town. It is located 250 kms from Mumbai on the
Mumbai-Goa highway. |
